Persevering Through The Epidemic: Cornell and Typhoid in 1903

"Epidemic" by David DeKok is a gripping tale of the devastating typhoid epidemic that affected Cornell University and Ithaca in 1903. Among the worst epidemics on a per capita basis in U.S. history, it devastated the local community and sent one third of Cornell students fleeing home. What were the factors that led to this crisis, and how did it permanently change Cornell in the aftermath? Join Corey Ryan Earle '07 for this discussion of Cornell in 1903 and how the university managed the most significant public health challenge in its history before COVID-19.

Recommended reading in advance (not required!):
    - "Epidemic: A Collision of Power, Privilege, and Public Health" by David DeKok (Lyons Press, 2011)

Title IX Then and Now: Celebrating Cornell Women's Athletics
Hosted by the Class of 1974

    Wednesday, February 23, 8:00 p.m. ET

In June 1972, the U.S. Congress and president brought into law Title IX, a portion of the Educational Amendments that prohibited gender discrimination in schools or other federally funded educational programs. One of the most notable effects was athletics: women’s participation in sports grew exponentially, including at Cornell, where by the fall of 1972 more than 300 women were involved in a dozen college sports – more than any other college or university in New York state.

But the passage of Title IX was far from the start of women’s athletics on East Hill. Cornell has offered women’s sports for more than 100 years. Nineteenth century Big Red women engaged in basketball and rowing. By fall 1972, Cornell fielded a dozen women’s intercollegiate teams out of Helen Newman Hall. Today, the university has 19 women’s varsity teams.

This year, Cornell celebrates women's athletics and the 50th anniversary of Title IX. As part of this celebration, the Class of 1974 (we were there when it happened!) invites you to join Cornell historian Corey Ryan Earle '07 for this look back at the history of women's athletics at Cornell. Corey will also moderate a panel of two Class of 1974 women athletes and two current student athletes.

    Panelists include:
Linda Smith McKeown '74 - ice hockey & track
Molly McBee Miller Ettenger '74 - ice hockey & tennis
    DeeDee Maizes '22 - swimming
Summer Parker-Hall ’25 - basketball (and current recipient of the Class of ’74 Scholarship)

Cornellians have joined together in song from earliest days. The Cornell Alma Mater is widely regarded as one of the best college songs in the world.

From the late 19th/early 20th century's informal gatherings around a piano, and the once-traditional commencement "Senior Class Sing" on the Goldwin Smith steps, to the 2022 present: Cornell songs and singing have resounded on campus.

Join Corey Ryan Earle '07 for a journey through musical history as we celebrate the songs, singers, ensembles and singing groups that have serenaded generations of alumni.

We’ll spotlight the late ’50s explosion of a cappella groups and highlight The Sherwoods Story (1958-1974): their break-off from the Glee Club, their Sherwoods “sound,” and their remarkable return to campus in 1985, now a Reunion tradition. Special guest appearances by Dave Hunter '68, Ron Johnson '68, and Frank Holden '62 of The Sherwoods.

Cornell Homecoming weekend returns September 23-25, 2022. The [Notable] Class of 1974 will host a free tailgate party Saturday, 9/24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. when the Yale at Cornell football game kicks off.

We’ll have deli sandwiches, chips, veggies, desserts and beverages. Also some chairs. We’ll be in the class & affinity group tailgating area along Campus Road (the one between Schoellkopf Field and Lynah Rink), a bit farther away from central campus, i.e. past Bartels Hall.

Please let us know you’re coming by emailing organizers Roberta Bandel Walcer or Bill Howard. And/or register on the Class Facebook page.  If you can help set up, please let Roberta know and thanks.

If you come back Friday there’s a fabulous DJ (8 p.m.) and fireworks (9 p.m.) at Schoellkopf Field. Cornell asks you that register for that, and the Fan Festival, separately.  Here is the link to register for those events.  Note the fee for food at Fan Festival is only if you want to eat there; our tailgate is free.

We hope to see you at our tailgate!  Go Big Red!
